Olympus OM-D E-M5 & Zuiko Olympus 1000mm F11

I recently exchanged my DSLR E620 camera body for the new Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera, to take advantage of 2 main features 1) the electronic viewfinder and 2) the improved in camera image stabilisation.

I visited Blashford Lakes to try out the combination of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera body with the Zuiko Olympus 1000mm F11 lens. The 2.1 crop factor means that the Zuiko Olympus 1000mm F11 lens turns into approx 2000mm lens and so a clear viewfinder is a necessity to be able to focus. This is where the the electronic viewfinder feature of this camera body proved excellent, providing a very clear bright view and allowing you to view exposure compensation adjustments as you make them.

The in-camera image stabilisation struggled to cope with the size & slowness of this lens, not a great surprise as this is not 1 on their compatible OM lens list (tripod & manfrotto large lens tripod head were used). The shake appeared to originate at the point of final shutter button press. Note to self – consider trying time delay next time.

These are the best 2 images from the day.

Surprisingly the use of the video mode turned out to work better, and this is the movie snippet.
