The Olympus OM-D EM-5 DSLR & earlier OM Olympus flash system trial

Now that spring has well and truly arrived, butterflies & bees being seen on the wing during the last couple of weeks, I decided it was a good time to trial the Olympus OM-D EM-5 DSLR with the Zuiko Olympus T Power Control unit, the Zuiko Olympus T28 twin flashes and one of my Zuiko Olympus macro lenses, the 80mm F4 macro lens. The T28 twin flash heads also had the ND8 filters attached to try and limit hot spots.

The venue Whitemill, a good location for insects as it is beside a river, and straight up I can confirm that you are able to combine the earlier OM Olympus flash system with the Olympus OM-D EM-5 DSLR camera.

On the day I found the Olympus OM-D EM-5 DSLR camera worked best in the shutter priority mode, as the electronic viewfinder (EV) continued to work, whereas the focus screen became too dark to focus on tiny subjects in manual mode (the EV did not work). I set the shutter speed to 200, and tested the T Power control unit in both automatic & manual. The latter also included flash power experimentation on both GN no. settings. The automatic mode produced the best results shown in this post.
