Fascinating Flies

Most people will not find flies very enchanting or glamorous, however when up close they can be quite fascinating. Now dont get me wrong they still do not fall into the enchanting or glamourous categories.

All of these fascinating fellows were found at Blashford Lakes nature reserve and photographed using the Olympus OMD EM5 MkII camera, legacy 80mm F4 macro lens attached to an Olympus 25mm extension tube and the Olympus OM Telescopic Auto Tube 65-116, using diffused Olympus FS-STF22 twin flash lighting, and shot at F11.

I will start with the largest and work down in size.

The biggest is this Green Pied Hoverfly (Volucella pellucens)

The next is a colourful member of the mayfly family, a Pond Olive Mayfly (Cloeon dipterum)

Smaller still is this Yellow Dung Fly (Scathophaga stercoraria)

followed by a Fannia canicularis housefly and a orange bottom fly who were both similar in size to each other

Then a couple of red eyed flies, the last being the tinniest of all.
